Dr. Shapiro is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons as well as an Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry at New York Medical College. He is involved in the teaching and training of medical students at both Colleges. After graduating from New York Medical College in New York, Dr. Shapiro served his internship and psychiatric residency at New York Medical College - Metropolitan Hospital Center in New York.
Dr. Shapiro has held numerous positions including Associate Director, Psychiatric Residency Training at New York Medical College, Clinical Director of the Department of Psychiatry at Westchester County Medical Center and, for 17 years from 1986 to 2003, Chief of the Department of Psychiatry at the Stamford Hospital in Stamford, Connecticut. In addition Dr. Shapiro has served as Chairman, and on the boards and advisory committees, of numerous mental health agencies.
Dr. Shapiro specializes in the treatment of individuals with depression, anxiety disorders and bipolar disorder, the treatment of physicians, forensic psychiatry, psychopharmacology and individual and marital psychotherapy, among others. He is experienced in psychophamacotherapy and has been certified by the American Society of Clinical Psychopharmacology. He is an experienced psychotherapist in individual, couples and marital therapy. He frequently serves as a consultant to other psychiatrists, physicians and psychotherapists. As well, Dr. Shapiro practices Forensic Psychiatry (consultations at the interface of psychiatry and the law) - independent psychiatric evaluations, consultations, expert witness evaluations and testimony, consultations with other psychiatrists and attorneys, etc.
